Newcastle United has reached a comprehensive agreement with Bundesliga side Freiburg to sign midfielder Johan Manzambi for a transfer package worth 51.5 million pounds ($60 million euros).

The deal was finalized on July 9, 2026, securing the 20-year-old Switzerland international ahead of Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

Manzambi is expected to finalize a long-term contract at St James' Park once his national team finishes its 2026 World Cup campaign.

He currently carries a minor knee injury ahead of Sunday's quarter-final against Argentina.

The transfer marks a record sale for Freiburg following Manzambi's historic World Cup performance.

He became the youngest player since 1966 to log five goal involvements in a single tournament, scoring three goals and providing two assists.

Alongside Manzambi, Newcastle completed a 23 million pound signing of 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax on a five-year contract.

These moves reinforce a squad that recently sold Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur and Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for a combined 169 million pounds.

While Newcastle continues to reshape its midfield, Brazil international Bruno Guimarães has reportedly informed the club of his desire to depart for Arsenal.

Newcastle maintains it has no intention of selling the 28-year-old unless an offer approaches 75 million pounds.

Rapid Rise and Character

Yann Sturm, a close friend and former Freiburg teammate, spoke about Manzambi's rapid development.

"I'm sure we will be hearing a lot more from him over the coming years," Sturm said.
