The Dutch sprinter had faced severe difficulties in the preceding days.

During Wednesday's stage to Pau, he was the only sprinter dropped on the Côte de Baleix climb, finishing last among 181 riders and trailing 11 minutes behind stage winner Olav Kooij.

Despite his struggles, the 32-year-old started the first major mountain stage toward Gavarnie-Gèdre.

However, he fell behind the peloton on an early fourth-category climb and decided to exit before reaching the Col d'Aspin.
