A luxury catamaran holiday in the south of France turned into a frightening ordeal due to ferocious winds and unexpected onboard emergencies.

The trip was organized by the writer's brother-in-law, a sailing enthusiast, to celebrate a 50th birthday.

The group included the writer, her sister, her 77-year-old mother, and three teenagers.

Instead of gentle autumn conditions, the voyage in October was met with fierce and relentless winds that created massive waves.

The severe weather caused multiple technical issues on the vessel, including a stuck mainsheet and a torn foresail sheet during violent gusts.

Onboard emergencies worsened when the elderly mother suffered a fall down the steep steps leading to the galley bunks.

Another alarming incident occurred when the anchored catamaran began dragging toward a regatta racecourse in Saint-Tropez while the family was ashore.

The challenges intensified during the return journey as strong winds continued to toss the boat around violently.

The sliding door separating the cockpit from the galley kept slamming shut due to a faulty latch and eventually jammed completely.

This mechanical failure forced the family members to exit the cabins by hoisting themselves up through the overhead deck hatches.

The writer's elderly mother, who was still sore from her previous fall, lacked the physical strength to escape through the hatch.

As a result, she remained confined inside the cabin for at least 24 hours while the boat moved through the rough sea.

An Unusual Rescue

The situation became critical when the family arrived at the island of Porquerolles and refused to leave the mother trapped below deck.

To free her, the family cleared the galley draining board and carefully lifted the elderly woman onto the surface.

They then managed to push her safely through the cabin window so she could join the rest of the family on land.
