A federal agent was fatally shot on Monday in Alexandria, Louisiana, while assisting local authorities in capturing a fugitive who had failed to appear for his sexual battery trial.
The suspect, 48-year-old Clarence Frazier Jr, was subsequently charged with murder in connection with the death of Deputy US Marshal Drew Hanson.

Frazier now faces the possibility of life imprisonment or the death penalty if convicted.
Federal prosecutors stated that US marshals and sheriff's deputies arrived at Frazier's residence on Monday with a search warrant.
After identifying themselves, officers forced entry and located the suspect barricaded inside his bedroom, where he allegedly opened fire and mortally wounded Hanson.

Following a standoff during which Frazier was injured, law enforcement officials successfully took him into custody and transported him to a local hospital for medical treatment.
Official Statement
Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche released a statement honoring the fallen deputy.
"His sacrifice will never be forgotten, and his service will forever stand as an inspiration to all who wear the badge," Blanche's statement added.

According to the official rollcall of honor on the agency's website, Hanson is among more than 200 US marshals, deputy marshals, special deputy marshals, and marshal guards who have died in the line of duty since 1794.
