Subaru is recalling more than 541,000 SUVs because of a labeling error. The problem involves a printed weight rating, not a mechanical defect.

Affected Models and the Issue

The recall covers 2019-2026 Ascent models, 2025-2026 Foresters, 2025-2026 Forester Hybrids, and the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid. In total, 541,237 vehicles are affected.

Subaru discovered that the federally required certification labels list an incorrect Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR). This violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 110.

The incorrect rear axle weight rating could mislead owners into overloading the vehicle. That increases the risk of a crash, though no incidents have been reported.

Subaru says it is not aware of any crashes, injuries, warranty claims, or technical reports related to the issue.

Unusual Fix: A Sticker by Mail

Instead of requiring a dealership visit, Subaru will mail owners a corrected certification overlay label with instructions. Owners can apply it themselves over the existing sticker.

Those uncomfortable doing so can have the label installed by a dealer at no charge.

The remedy is low-tech but appropriate since the sticker, not the vehicle, is the problem.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) raised concerns about the rating in May.

Subaru then reviewed GAWR values for vehicles dating back to 2003 before issuing the recall.
