The United States government announced a decision to impose 25% tariffs on specific Brazilian products starting July 22, 2026, prompting immediate condemnation from the Brazilian government, as reported by The Guardian.

The penalties follow a year-long investigation by the U. S.

Trade Representative, which concluded Brazil engaged in unfair trade practices, including lax anti-corruption enforcement and its own unfair tariffs.

Exemptions to the new tariffs will apply to goods not produced in the U. S.

or those that could disrupt supply chains, such as coffee, beef, oranges, orange juice, some oil and gas energy products, and aerospace components.

Brazil Rejects Accusations

The office of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva rejected the accusations of unfair trade practices in an official statement on social media.

"The Brazilian government repudiates the decision announced today by the United States government regarding the imposition of 25 percent tariffs on Brazilian products," said the office of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that the tariffs are necessary to protect American interests after bilateral negotiations failed to resolve the trade issues.

"Extensive negotiations with Brazil over the past year have not resolved these issues, but we remain open to continuing negotiations with Brazil to bring about long-needed changes to the problems identified in this investigation," said Jamieson Greer.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the decision, accusing President Lula of failing to negotiate in good faith during the year-long process.

"Let there be no confusion about why: President Lula and his government have not negotiated with the US in good faith.

His economic policies are bad for Americans and bad for Brazilians.

For the past year, Lula has put his own ego ahead of making a deal for the welfare of the Brazilian people, and these tariffs are the price for that," said Marco Rubio.

The tariffs are enacted under section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which authorized the initial investigation into Brazil's trade policies.
