A Volkswagen owner says a routine over-the-air (OTA) software update left his car riddled with warning messages and a repair bill approaching $1,600.
Asher Koreman of Cincinnati told local station WKRC that his 2021 Volkswagen Jetta prompted him to install a software update last month.

Instead of visiting a dealer, he chose the free OTA option.
Immediately after restarting the car, Koreman says the digital instrument cluster was flooded with error messages.
The update allegedly disabled lane departure warnings, backup alerts, parts of the infotainment system, and vehicle information like oil temperature display.
Dealer Diagnosis and Out-of-Pocket Cost
Koreman took the Jetta to a local Volkswagen dealership.
He says he was quoted roughly $200 for diagnostic work and another $1,400 for repairs, totaling around $1,600.
The dealer reportedly determined the issue was a pre-existing condition unrelated to the software update. Because the vehicle's warranty had expired, the repair was not covered.

Instead of authorizing the work, Koreman performed a hard battery reset at home. He says that restored some functionality, but many problems remain.
Koreman acknowledges the software update and the failures could be a coincidence.
However, he notes the timing is hard to ignore since the issues appeared immediately after the installation.
Volkswagen declined to comment on Koreman's specific case but issued a general statement: “At Volkswagen, we are committed to delivering the highest levels of quality and customer satisfaction.
While we do not comment on individual cases, we encourage customers with questions or concerns to contact our Customer Care team for dedicated support.”
Whether the OTA update caused the problem or exposed an existing fault remains unclear.

The lack of data from VW to prove no association leaves the owner with unanswered questions.
