The historic Bayeux tapestry arrived at the British Museum from France under cover of darkness for a major cultural diplomacy exhibition.

A small group of guests, including British officials, viewed the 70-meter medieval embroidery on Tuesday during ongoing preparations for its public unveiling scheduled in September.

The loan, originally proposed in 2018, required years of complex negotiations between London and Paris regarding strict transport conditions, temperature controls, and protective lighting requirements.

Officials View the Artifact

"You get a sense of the sheer vastness of the tapestry when you walk into that room," said Lisa Nandy, Culture Secretary.

Nandy noted that the project felt fully realized during a previous event at the institution.

"When President Macron visited the British Museum last year and we signed the official document, that’s when it all felt real to me," she said.

Museum officials observed strict preservation protocols during the viewing, which required participants to wear protective gear.

"We look like a bunch of cheesemongers," said George Osborne, British Museum Chair.

Lead curator Michael Lewis guided the guests through the visible section of the fabric depicting William the Conqueror.

"So someone’s sitting on the throne, and someone wants to take it from him," said Osborne.

The viewing included lighthearted exchanges regarding the historical narrative woven into the artifact. "I’ve been stitched up here," said Nandy.

Osborne questioned the curator about the historical legitimacy of the medieval invasion. "What would historians say about William now?"
