Support from Progressive Leaders

Progressive U. S.

representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, and Summer Lee joined Pearson at the event.

Pressley highlighted Pearson's commitment to community, stating, "Justin has shown up in the quiet moments for the neighbor in need.

He shows up in the consequential moments when our rights are on the line."

Lee remarked, "Memphis, I hope you know that you’re at the epicenter of a storm that’s brewing all over this country," likening the situation to historical injustices.

Pearson said, "Today we are in the fight of our lives to make this district, our state, and this nation better for ourselves and for those who will come after us."

Background on Pearson and Redistricting

Pearson was expelled from the Tennessee general assembly in April 2023 following protests for gun control after a school shooting in Nashville.

He was later reappointed by the Shelby County Commission.

As reported by The Guardian, the Tennessee legislature redrew congressional districts in May after a U. S.

Supreme Court ruling, effectively dismantling the Voting Rights Act.
