US Republican politicians are threatening to impose tariffs and sanctions on Canada after thick smoke from intense Canadian wildfires drifted across the border on Friday, causing severe air pollution for tens of millions of Americans.

The toxic haze blanketed major metropolitan areas across the US Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast, prompting hazardous air quality warnings and forcing residents to stay indoors.

More than 191 out-of-control blazes are currently burning in Canada, destroying millions of acres and displacing thousands of people.

Republican Leaders Demand Action

Former President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that the cost of this pollution must be added to the tariffs Canada is currently paying.

Trump stated he plans to contact Ottawa to demand answers regarding their wildfire management strategy.

Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno announced a bill to sanction Canada and responsible officials for what he called an atrocity.

Moreno criticized the Canadian government for failing to invest in forest thinning, fuel reduction, and prescribed burns.

Four Republican House members from Michigan sent a joint letter warning Ottawa of unilateral American action to protect US citizens.

They wrote that if Canada will not manage its forests, the United States will act on its own.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by emphasizing international climate obligations and noting that the US is also experiencing a severe wildfire season.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford suggested that practical assistance from Washington would be more effective than political rhetoric.

Ford noted that Canada has helped American friends in the past and that is what countries are supposed to do.

Data from the National Interagency Fire Center shows US wildfires have burned over 5,740 square miles this year, 31 percent higher than the 10-year average.

Smoke from fires in Minnesota, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho has drifted north into Canadian territory.

The air quality index reached a hazardous 361 in Chicago and Detroit on Friday, while Baltimore and Washington DC recorded unhealthy levels.
