A cyberattack on Japanese cold-chain giant Nichirei Corporation has caused widespread supply disruptions and product delays at major restaurant chains, including Kura Sushi and KFC Japan.
The Tokyo-based company confirmed that unauthorized system access affected inbound and outbound operations at several refrigerated warehouses and frozen food shipment hubs nationwide.
Nichirei stated that the system failures are limited to Japan, and investigations have found no evidence of leaked personal customer data.
"We are currently investigating and taking measures to restore the systems; we will provide an update regarding the expected time of recovery period," Nichirei said.
Kura Sushi, which operates nearly 700 sushi outlets across Japan, reported significant delivery delays for sushi ingredients, frozen goods, and food inventory, particularly in Western Japan.
"A system failure is currently occurring due to unauthorized access affecting one of our business partners," Kura Sushi said.
"As a result, deliveries of sushi ingredients, frozen foods, and some food items to our stores have been delayed or have not arrived."
The restaurant operator maintained inventory reserves of promotional items to mitigate stockouts and ensure key menu offerings remained available.
KFC Japan also announced operational adjustments due to ingredient shortages from the logistics outage, warning of potential store closures, altered hours, menu restrictions, and temporary suspension of online ordering through its app and website.
"Consequently, some products may be out of stock, menu items may be limited, business hours may be shortened, and some stores may be closed depending on the availability of ingredients," KFC Japan said.
