Multiple weather alerts swept across five Canadian provinces and one territory on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, threatening to break historical high temperature records.
Environment Canada placed vast portions of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and the Northwest Territories under advisories for poor air quality, severe thunderstorms, and dangerous heat.

Humidex values pushed feeling temperatures into the mid-40s C across southern Ontario, with downtown Toronto reaching 36.8 C by late afternoon.
Severe weather risks extended eastward, where forecasters issued an orange tornado watch for areas between Montreal and Quebec City.
The weather agency warned that destructive winds could cause substantial damage.
Wildfire Smoke Worsens Conditions
A massive high-pressure system originating in the United States caused the widespread alerts, according to Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson.
"We've got, in some cases, a significant wildfire activity, especially to the west of Thunder Bay," Coulson said.
Thick plumes of wildfire smoke moving eastward from western blazes worsened conditions in northern regions already suffering from elevated heat thresholds, creating combined air quality hazards.
"With the winds coming in from the west, we're seeing plumes of this wildfire smoke moving eastwards towards the Thunder Bay area," Coulson added.

Local authorities opened public cooling stations and pools, while several small businesses temporarily halted operations to protect workers from extreme indoor conditions.
"We decided to shut down, essentially, for the next two days," said Sarah Bowen, social media manager for the Heart and Soul Café in Ottawa.
The business opted to pause service to prevent heat-related illness among employees.
"We just want to keep our staff safe.
The kitchen temperature is going to get out of hand, even with air conditioning and all the fans running," Bowen explained.
Health officials advised residents to watch closely for symptoms of heat exhaustion and turn on air conditioning.
Medical experts in northern territories emphasized taking extra precautions against prolonged smoke exposure.

Dr. Courtney Howard noted that well-fitted N95 masks filter out about 90% of fine particulate matter, making them far more effective than surgical masks, according to CBC News.
