Wildfires also swept through Whitewater Lake First Nation, situated 250 kilometers north of Thunder Bay, destroying all remaining community infrastructure.
A 2019 study in the Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction noted that 80 percent of Indigenous communities reside in high-risk fire zones.
Western University associate professor Nicole Redvers spoke on the systemic risks affecting Indigenous territories.
"A community had to evacuate themselves without any warning," she said.
"If we don’t have the preparedness capacity within Canada to ensure that all communities have climate adaption plans in place … we’re definitely not well placed to have resilience within our communities going forward."
