Wildfires burning near Bordeaux are threatening France's wine industry, raising severe concerns over potential smoke taint on grapes while the sector already faces dropping global consumption and severe export declines.

The blazes come amid what President Emmanuel Macron called the nation's worst wave of wildfires since World War II.

Last week, officials ordered the evacuation of nearly 60,000 residents near Bordeaux, a region that produces roughly 700 million bottles of wine annually, according to investment advising firm Vineyards Bordeaux.

Industry experts warn that the timing of the fires coincides with a critical stage in the grape development cycle, making crops especially vulnerable to atmospheric contamination.

"The grapes right now are right between when they turn from green to red, and that's the worst time for smoke to hit them," said Ray Isle, Executive Wine Editor at Food & Wine.

While authorities report that the fire's advance has stopped, the full economic damage remains uncertain, with lingering smoke posing a long-term risk to crop quality and reputation.

"You're gonna have wine that tastes like licking an ashtray," said Isle.

Recent agricultural disasters highlight the potential scope of financial loss.

In 2020, California's wine industry suffered roughly $3.7 billion in losses after fires burned over 4 million acres, according to figures from The Wine Institute and Cal Fire.

"It can be a big problem," said Isle.

France's wine and spirits sector, which generated approximately $19 billion in exports in 2024, was struggling before the fires started.
