"Honestly, I'm really happy with the putt I hit.
I'd love to hit it again knowing the read, but I wouldn't hit it again knowing what I knew at the time."
Shortly after Herbert finished, American Sam Burns also shot a 62, concluding his round by holing out from a greenside bunker.
Burns arrived at Royal Birkdale on Monday after the birth of his second child and had played minimal golf before the tournament.
Burns expressed surprise at his performance given his recent schedule and history on links courses.
"She encouraged me to come over here and play, and here we are," he said.
He noted the challenge of adjusting to the conditions. "I'm not a huge fan of links golf," Burns said.
"I just haven't played well on links golf and it's not something I'm very familiar with. I don't know what to say.
You feel like you've hit a decent shot, and you get up there, and the next thing you know you're hitting it backwards.
That's what I've tried to work on – trying to be more accepting."
