Subaru will end orders for its mild-hybrid models in Japan by fall 2026, marking the discontinuation of the e-BOXER powertrain.
The decision, reported by Nikkei, comes as stricter emission regulations and market shifts push the automaker toward stronger electrification.

From September 2026, Subaru's lineup will split into three distinct camps: pure internal combustion engines, strong hybrids using the S:HEV system, and fully electric vehicles.
The mild-hybrid e-BOXER, introduced in 2018, will be phased out entirely.
Subaru stated: “In light of the progress in electrification and the strengthening of environmental regulations, we have reviewed our product portfolio and have decided to discontinue the mild hybrid vehicle program.”
Impact on Key Models
With the e-BOXER gone, the Impreza hatchback becomes a purely gasoline-powered model.
Meanwhile, the closely related Crosstrek will adopt the S:HEV strong hybrid system as its only option, eliminating overlap between the two.
The Levorg Layback and Forester will offer a choice between the turbo 1.8-liter engine and the S:HEV hybrid.

The regular Levorg wagon and WRX S4 sedan retain the turbo 2.4-liter boxer, while the BRZ keeps its naturally aspirated engine.
On the electric side, Subaru's battery EV lineup includes the Solterra, Uncharted, Trailseeker, and Getaway crossovers.
Subaru's S:HEV system combines a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder Boxer with a single electric motor and a battery sourced from Toyota.
However, power is delivered through Subaru's mechanical Symmetrical AWD, not Toyota's E-Four system.
Despite the electrification push, Subaru hasn't abandoned performance enthusiasts.

The company has confirmed three upcoming manual-transmission, gasoline-powered models: a WRX hatchback, a WRX sedan, and an updated BRZ.
