Dwindling stockpiles of air defense and long-range munitions are restricting United States military options in the Middle East as the White House considers expanding operations against Iran, an American official warned on July 21, 2026.
The strategic constraint comes after a ninth consecutive night of American strikes aimed at curbing Tehran's regional capabilities, bringing both nations closer to all-out conflict.

"We do not have enough to safely sustain operations, and I don't think the White House is aware of that," said an anonymous US official familiar with administration discussions.
Despite the intensifying air offensive, Iranian forces continued launching barrages across the region, targeting facilities in Bahrain, Jordan, and Syria while both governments maintained diplomatic communication behind the scenes.
"Diplomacy also knows its duties well and spares no efforts," said Esmail Baghaei, Iran's foreign ministry spokesman, noting that Tehran had received proposals from regional mediators.
State Department officials confirmed that Washington remains open to diplomatic channels alongside ongoing military operations.
"We've tried multiple times with Iran, and we'll continue to try.
If that door opens, we'll be happy to see it open," said Marco Rubio, US Secretary of State.
The recent escalation followed targeted Iranian strikes that killed three American service members at an air base in Jordan, penetrating defense systems to strike housing units and infrastructure.
