Toronto police have arrested and charged Dr. Dilan Dissanayake, 44, a staff rheumatologist at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), with possession and accessing of child sexual abuse and exploitation material.
The arrest occurred on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, following an investigation by the Internet Child Exploitation Unit that began in January after authorities discovered an electronic device used to download illegal material.

Investigators executed search warrants in February at SickKids and a private residence, seizing multiple devices including a work computer.
Court records allege Dissanayake accessed the illicit content between January 19 and January 28.
Following his court appearance, Dissanayake was released on $20,000 bail with conditions prohibiting social media access, internet messaging, and being alone with minors other than his own children.
Police emphasized that investigators have found no evidence linking the material to Dissanayake's medical practice.
He has been a staff rheumatologist at SickKids for over a decade after earning his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 2014.
SickKids immediately placed Dissanayake on leave and issued a statement on its website expressing deep dismay and condemning the alleged behavior.
The hospital stated that patient safety remains paramount and no direct risks to patients or families have been reported.
"We understand that this news is concerning and the safety and well-being of our patients, families and staff remain our highest priority," the statement added.
