Agent Darren Ferris publicly criticized the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 23, 2026, claiming his former client Mitch Marner was scapegoated and never protected by the organization during his nine-season tenure in Toronto.
Speaking on the PuckPedia Hockey Show, Ferris detailed the prolonged friction between Marner and the franchise, which began during initial entry-level contract negotiations when the team urged the winger to forgo performance bonuses.

"It's unfortunate in Toronto the way things went right from the get-go," said Ferris.
Ferris explained that the team originally promised no rookies would receive performance bonuses, a commitment broken when Toronto granted a lucrative bonus structure to fellow prospect Auston Matthews shortly thereafter.
"They promised nobody [would] get [performance bonuses]," said Ferris. "As you know, they didn't fulfill that.
He soon found out that a promise that isn't in the contract isn't a promise, it's a tactic."
The unresolved tension spilled into Marner's 2019 contract negotiations, creating public misperceptions that lingered throughout his career in Toronto and turned the local fan base against him.
"To this day, people say he didn't show up for training camp. Well, he did.
He didn't miss a day of training camp ... He's never ever held out from a camp," said Ferris.
"So there was a lot of misinformation, which just kept spiralling into a lot of information that just made him the villain here in the city."
Despite producing 63 points across 70 postseason games and playing through severe injuries, Marner frequently drew the brunt of fan and media backlash following the team's recurring playoff exits.
