Wildfires raging in southwestern France have consumed 42,000 hectares of land and advanced to within 15 kilometers of the Bordeaux metropolitan area, authorities reported on July 26, 2026.
Thick smoke billowed across the A63 highway between Bordeaux and the Spanish border, disrupting traffic and prompting emergency services to close several sections of the road.

More than 220,000 people have been evacuated from the affected region, while approximately 240 homes were destroyed, with the municipality of Le Porge suffering severe damage.
Travelers passing through the smoke-filled corridor reported seeing emergency vehicles operating along the highway. "It's bizarre.
People are driving here with face masks in the car," said Gertie Voorter, a traveler from Grevenbicht driving along the highway.

Local officials emphasized that while the fires pose an immediate threat to the perimeter of the urban center, no mass evacuation orders have been issued for the inner city of Bordeaux, which houses over 270,000 residents within a broader metropolitan region of nearly 870,000 people.

"The fire is at the gates of the metropolis. We are preparing for all scenarios," said Thomas Cazenave, Mayor of Bordeaux.

Emergency crews continue monitoring the situation across the tourist-heavy area as firefighting teams work to contain the perimeter.
