NEC Nijmegen has reopened talks to sign Ajax defender Ahmetcan Kaplan on a permanent transfer, according to local broadcaster Omroep Gelderland.

The 23-year-old Turkish center-back spent last season on loan at the Eredivisie club, where he impressed under head coach Dick Schreuder.

Earlier in the summer transfer window, Ajax's asking price was considered too high for NEC.

However, the Nijmegen side has now revived its interest in securing the left-footed defender.

Kaplan remains under contract with Ajax until mid-2027.

His playing time in Amsterdam is expected to be limited due to competition from Daley Blind, Youri Baas, and Dies Janse.

Before NEC's renewed pursuit, Turkish club Trabzonspor made an unsuccessful bid of six million euros including bonuses.

Kaplan declined the offer as he preferred not to return to his home country.

If finalized, Kaplan would be NEC's second major signing in quick succession.
