Eric Bieniemy has returned to the Kansas City Chiefs as offensive coordinator, accepting an offer from head coach Andy Reid after Matt Nagy's contract was not renewed.
Bieniemy previously coordinated the Chiefs' offense from 2018 to 2022, winning two Super Bowls, before stints with the Washington Commanders and Chicago Bears.

His return comes as quarterback Patrick Mahomes recovers from knee surgery following a 6-11 season in 2025, where Kansas City missed the playoffs and ranked 20th in total offense.
During the opening rookie training camp practice on July 25, 2026, Bieniemy addressed the offensive unit after a red zone interception by cornerback Jadon Canady went unpursued.
“It was hard to pass up when the head man picks up the phone and says, ‘B, let’s get this thing going,'” Bieniemy said.
He emphasized the need to finish every play, regardless of mistakes. “We don’t want to take anything for granted when placed in those situations,” he added.
Coaching Philosophy and Expectations
Reflecting on past criticisms of his high-intensity style, Bieniemy stressed the work ethic required for success.
“In this business, if you’re going to be successful, you’ve got to be willing to work for it,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of a balanced offense with free agent signee Kenneth Walker III, citing Damien Williams’ performance as an example of complementary football.
Bieniemy outlined training camp goals: “We still have to put everything together.
Part of going to training camp is making sure we can fundamentally grow together as an offensive unit.”
He emphasized fundamental execution over raw talent. “We’ve got to get back to doing the fundamental things the right way,” he told The Athletic.
Head coach Andy Reid praised Bieniemy’s leadership. “He’s one of the more phenomenal guys I’ve been around as a leader of men,” Reid said.
Former NFL head coach Jon Gruden also commended Bieniemy’s motivational skills, noting his work with the Bears’ third-ranked rushing attack in 2025.

Veteran players are scheduled to report to training camp on July 28, 2026.
