The Washington Commanders fired tight ends coach Ben Steele on Monday, July 27, 2026, after he was arrested for driving under the influence in Virginia.
According to Loudoun County District Court records, Steele was arrested on June 7 for allegedly driving while intoxicated.

He also faces charges of resisting arrest, refusing a blood or breath test, and improper lane changes.
Steele reported the arrest to team officials, who informed the NFL. The organization placed him on paid administrative leave before terminating his employment for violating team policy.
Offensive assistant Wes Welker led the tight ends during offseason minicamp while Steele was on leave.
Head coach Dan Quinn plans to name a permanent replacement on Tuesday as players report for camp.
The Commanders confirmed the departure on social media without providing details on the arrest.
"We are parting ways with tight ends coach Ben Steele," the team said, adding that they would have no further comment.

NFL reporters noted the unusual timing of the decision on the eve of training camp.
ESPN's John Keim said making staff changes two days before camp is uncommon across the league.
Social media users analyzed the abrupt language in the team's announcement.
One user wrote, "No further comment instead of we wish he and his family the best," while another said, "Dude messed up."
Prior to his release, Steele was expected to direct a revamped unit after the Commanders signed free agent tight end Chig Okonkwo to a three-year deal worth up to $30 million, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
