Senator Mitch McConnell has not received medical clearance to leave a rehabilitation facility following a fall at his home last month, his office announced on July 27, 2026.
The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican is currently undergoing intensive physical therapy after a weekslong hospitalization complicated by pneumonia, according to statements from his office and the Office of the Attending Physician (OAP).
Medical officials noted that McConnell adheres to a rigorous daily schedule to support his recovery.
"Since his discharge from hospital care, he has maintained a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation," the OAP statement said.
Despite progress, physicians confirmed he is not yet ready to resume his normal duties in Washington.
"He is not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office," the OAP statement said.
His therapy program involves multiple daily sessions aimed at building strength and preventing future falls, with his childhood polio remaining a significant mobility factor.
McConnell released a personal statement on his rehabilitation and commitment to returning to his duties.
"I’m still working hard to get back to my full schedule of work in the Senate and in Kentucky, keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors’ orders," he said.
Because of his recovery, the senator confirmed he will miss an upcoming annual political event in Kentucky.
"There’s no place I’d rather be on the first Saturday in August than with the good people of western Kentucky, feasting on pork and mutton," McConnell said.
He concluded by expressing gratitude for public support.
"As always, I appreciate all of your continued well wishes, and I’m looking forward to getting back to the Senate and to Kentucky soon," he said.
McConnell's office released a photo taken July 26 showing him with his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.
Spokesperson David Popp confirmed McConnell continues to meet with staff on Senate business.
