Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid addressed the media on July 27, 2026, expressing his disappointment regarding the recent trade sending veteran defenseman Darnell Nurse to the San Jose Sharks.
Speaking at the Zach Hyman Golf Classic in Ontario, McDavid reflected on losing his longtime teammate following an offseason deal that brought defensemen Shakir Mukhamadullin and Zack Sharp to Edmonton.

Nurse requested a trade earlier in the summer after facing ongoing fan criticism over his heavy $9.25 million annual salary cap hit on an eight-year contract through 2029-30.
The move concluded Nurse's 12-year tenure in Edmonton, where he served as an assistant captain since the 2019-20 season and helped guide the franchise to back-to-back Stanley Cup Final appearances in 2024 and 2025.
"It's obviously disappointing to lose someone like Darnell and the rest of the guys," said McDavid.
McDavid acknowledged the financial reality of the sport while noting how much Nurse meant to the organization and the surrounding community.
"But it's part of the business, unfortunately," said McDavid.
The roster move cleared substantial salary cap flexibility for the front office ahead of the upcoming regular season.
"It's been hard to really put into words what Nursery's been to not only me, but the whole group and everybody in Edmonton," said McDavid.
Despite the emotional exit, the superstar center emphasized his confidence in the organization's roster overhaul.
"So extremely disappointed to see that happen," said McDavid.
