US diplomats staged a dramatic walkout from a United Nations Security Council meeting on Ukraine on July 27, 2026, after French representatives criticized the Trump administration's record on human rights.
The diplomatic dispute follows the US opposition to granting a new four-year term to Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Turk secured broad support for his reappointment on July 24, 2026, in a General Assembly vote of 144 to 10, with 13 abstentions, where the United States voted against him.
Tensions mounted after the French mission to the UN in Geneva published a post on social media following the vote, comparing Washington's standing on human rights to authoritarian regimes.
"The United States was once a beacon of human rights. That is no longer the case.
Today, it finds itself isolated alongside North Korea, Nicaragua, Mali, and Russia.
And the world no longer listens to them," posted the French mission to the UN in Geneva.
US representatives rejected the critique and accused France of shielding severe human rights offenders while criticizing sovereign democracies.
"For someone who has constantly lectured free and sovereign democracies, like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Israel, while cozying up to the world's worst oppressors," said Mike Waltz, US Ambassador to the UN.

Following the brief departure from the chamber, US Deputy Ambassador Dan Negrea further condemned France's moral stance during the meeting.
