NASA's Mars rovers have uncovered evidence of ancient asteroid bombardments and inspected structural wear, providing unprecedented insight into the Red Planet's geological evolution and operational longevity.

Data gathered by the Perseverance rover at Jezero Crater reveals that rock layers in the Broom Point member, a 245-foot-thick formation, formed from repeated space debris impacts occurring over 3.9 billion years ago.

The findings indicate that molten droplets, fine dust, and high-velocity debris flows continuously shaped the ancient Martian terrain long before the crater itself existed.

Researchers identified six distinct rock types in the formation, including breccias containing gas cavities and dark glassy beads that match features generated by massive impact events.

Ancient Record Preserved

"Since leaving the crater, Perseverance has been exploring a brand-new frontier, both geographically and geologically – a chapter of Martian time that predates the crater itself," said Ken Farley at Caltech in Pasadena, California.

Farley noted that Mars preserved this ancient geological record because it lacks plate tectonics, which erased Earth's earliest history.

"On Earth, our earliest geologic history has been fundamentally broken up, deformed, and erased by plate tectonics," said Farley.

"Because Mars lacks plate tectonics to recycle its crust, this ancient record remains intact, giving us a rare glimpse into a geological time period that doesn't exist on our own planet."

Geological analysis suggests two separate large asteroid strikes tilted the local rock strata to nearly vertical angles exceeding 80 degrees.
