Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI for PS5 will be distributed exclusively via download codes that are region-locked and, in certain countries like Japan, expire after a set period.
The region-locking restricts cross-border imports and complicates game activation for players outside their purchase region.

According to Rockstar, PS5 download codes cannot be redeemed on accounts from different countries, even though the console itself is region-free.
Japan-Specific Expiration
In Japan, the codes expire 170 days after November 19, 2026, limiting the window for activation.
Rockstar stated, "The digital download code for Grand Theft Auto VI works differently depending on the platform and country of purchase.
It is recommended that you buy and play from a retailer that is in the country of your platform account to avoid potential activation problems."
Unlike PS5, Xbox download codes do not have similar region-locking, allowing players to redeem codes from different regions without issues.
