Federal authorities temporarily closed the Hoover Dam to all public access beginning July 19, 2026, after an equipment malfunction involving the facility's 150-ton cableway system created safety concerns near the main entrance road in Boulder City, Nevada.
The closure halted all tourist operations and visitor roadway access through the site, which sits about 35 miles from Las Vegas.

Flashing road signs and security guards turned away travelers arriving at the facility's checkpoint.
Unexpected Movement During Maintenance
During routine maintenance, the cableway carriage—used to transport heavy equipment across the Colorado River between the Nevada and Arizona powerplants—moved unexpectedly and placed additional stress on internal components.
In response, officials secured the surrounding area, including sections near the parking garage.
A specialty contractor is scheduled to join Bureau of Reclamation maintenance crews on site Wednesday, July 21, to evaluate the mechanical stress and safely reposition the suspended carriage.

Officials confirmed that no reopening date will be established until the technical evaluation is finished.
Reclamation Lower Colorado Basin Acting Regional Director Genevieve Johnson addressed the public regarding the ongoing maintenance response.
"We appreciate the public's patience and understanding while our teams work through this situation," said Johnson. "Safety remains our top priority.
While visitor access is temporarily paused, Hoover Dam and the powerplant are operating normally, and there is no risk to the facility."

Despite the halt in public access, federal officials confirmed that safe access routes remain open for employees and contractors, allowing routine power generation and plant operations to continue uninterrupted.
