Global demand for ecological resources officially exceeded the planet's annual regenerative capacity on July 30, 2026, according to calculations released by the Global Footprint Network.
The milestone marks the point where humanity enters ecological deficit for the remainder of the calendar year.

Data indicates that human consumption currently requires the resources of 1.73 Earths to sustain itself.
Research from the United Nations reveals that overfished marine stocks grew from 10 percent in 1974 to over 50 percent by 2021, while global rainforest deforestation cleared 26.5 million hectares in 2024 alone.
Disproportionate Consumption Across Nations
Industrialized nations drive a disproportionate share of global consumption. Germany exhausted its allocated natural budget on May 10, whereas Qatar reached its limit on February 4.
Conversely, lower-consuming countries such as Honduras would not reach their limit until November 27.
Political leaders and environmental organizations voiced concerns regarding the long-term economic and ecological consequences of sustained resource overconsumption.
"Earth Overshoot Day is the annual receipt for a delayed environmental bankruptcy," said Olaf Bandt, Chairman of BUND.
"Our economic system is eating its own substance and thus destroying the foundations of life for future generations."
He emphasized that expanding renewable energy infrastructure remains essential to curbing carbon emissions and lowering national dependence on fossil fuels.
"One of the most powerful levers to protect the planet's resources and push Earth Overshoot Day back is the consistent phase-out of fossil fuels, especially gas," Bandt said.
