Haitian officials in Miami are urging all Haitian nationals and Haitian Americans to obtain proper passports immediately as federal Temporary Protected Status protections expire.
Consular authorities confirmed on July 30, 2026, that 257 Haitians are currently held in federal immigration custody.

With federal enforcement ramping up across the United States, Haitian Consular General Yverick Delerme Cyril cautioned community members about the risks of remaining without valid home-country identification documents while traveling or commuting.
"We are in a bad situation right now. Everybody needs to be careful," Delerme Cyril said.
Consular officials emphasized that holding a national passport remains vital for verifying identity if an individual is detained by federal authorities.
"If you need anything outside, I know you need to drive. If you have any status pending, I don't encourage anybody to drive," Delerme Cyril warned.
As American-issued identifications lapse alongside expiring protective status, diplomats urge all individuals of Haitian descent to carry valid foreign documentation regardless of their legal standing.

"It doesn't matter if you're traveling inside the USA; you need to have your passport. It doesn't matter if you have a valid ID," he said.
Community members visited the consulate on Thursday to secure their identification papers to prevent potential misidentification during immigration enforcement actions.
"People will give us a different identity that doesn't belong to us, so our passport is very important to have," Alex said.
To minimize exposure to enforcement operations, applicants can start passport applications online through the official consulate web portal before a single required office visit.

Completed passports can subsequently be delivered directly to applicant residences, and family members of detained individuals are urged to contact consular staff at 305-916-8184 for emergency assistance.
