Top seed Alex de Minaur advanced to the quarterfinals in Washington after defeating 17-year-old Cruz Hewitt 6-2, 6-3 on Wednesday.
The world No. 6 halted the teenager's main-draw debut, which had included a first career ATP match victory in the opening round.

De Minaur took control early, breaking serve three consecutive times to build a 5-0 lead in the first set.
Hewitt avoided a bagel, but De Minaur closed out the set 6-2 in 30 minutes.
The second set saw stronger resistance from Hewitt, yet De Minaur secured the decisive break to seal the match.
A Unique Matchup
The match carried a personal dynamic, as Lleyton Hewitt—Cruz's father and a two-time Grand Slam champion—has mentored De Minaur for a decade.
"It will be a strange situation," De Minaur said before the match.
De Minaur noted his long-standing relationship with the junior Wimbledon finalist, having watched him grow up.

"I have seen Cruz grow up over the last ten years. I have seen him become the man he is today," De Minaur said.
Hewitt acknowledged the unique nature of facing a family acquaintance on the professional court.
"He is like a big brother to me," Hewitt said.
The 17-year-old highlighted their close connection off the court.
"I have known him almost my whole life. We celebrate Christmas together," Hewitt said.

With the win, Hewitt's tournament run ends, while De Minaur moves on to the quarterfinal stage.
