The Whitecaps have been on the market since late 2024.

Current ownership has cited challenges related to stadium control and revenue at BC Place, which is owned by the provincial government.

Greg Kerfoot remains the majority owner, with minority partners Jeff Mallett, Steve Luczo, and two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash.

In April, a Las Vegas group also made an offer, proposing to relocate the team to Nevada.

Griffiths sold the Canucks in 1997 and was instrumental in bringing the NBA's Vancouver Grizzlies to the city in 1995.

The Grizzlies later moved to Memphis in 2001.

Despite financial difficulties, the Whitecaps have seen strong on-field success recently.

They reached the MLS final last year and are currently tied for first in the Western Conference standings.

The club also enjoys robust local support, having sold over 35,000 tickets for their upcoming home game against Los Angeles FC, as reported by the team on July 31.

Dan Murphy reported on X that Griffiths, who has been linked to the Whitecaps ownership for months, is a serious suitor.

His involvement is welcomed by fans.

Griffiths took operational control of the Canucks in 1988 and remained involved until 1997.

He also played a key role in Vancouver hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics and owned the Grizzlies during their initial years in the city.
