Out of 174 eventual division champions, 125 held at least a share of the lead entering August.
This year's division leaders as of August 1 include the Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago White Sox, Houston Astros, Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers, and Los Angeles Dodgers.
The analysis excludes the shortened 2020 season to focus on full-season implications.

Additionally, 19 of the last 29 World Series champions held a division lead entering August.
In the previous season, three of the six August 1 leaders secured division titles: the Toronto Blue Jays won the AL East, while the Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers took their National League divisions.

Meanwhile, the Detroit Tigers reached the postseason as a Wild Card team, but the Houston Astros and New York Mets missed the playoffs.
Since 1996, only four seasons saw all six August 1 leaders finish in first place: 1996, 1997, 1999, and 2019.
Among current leaders, the Astros, Brewers, and Dodgers also led their divisions on August 1 last year.
The Braves last held an August 1 lead in 2023, while the Rays and White Sox last did so in 2021.

While 72 percent of August 1 leaders finish in first place, 28 percent of eventual champions overcome August deficits before the Trade Deadline.
