Honda has reportedly hired Tata Technologies to develop a new vehicle platform. The architecture is expected to support combustion, hybrid, and electric powertrains.

This move could help Honda rebuild its thin lineup in India and other markets.

It marks the first time Honda has trusted an Indian engineering services firm to build a platform end to end.

According to Bloomberg, the future architecture will underpin several cars. It will accommodate internal-combustion, hybrid, and battery-electric powertrains.

Honda declined to discuss specific arrangements but said it is “always considering” outside partnerships to sharpen competitiveness. Tata Technologies did not respond to a request for comment.

Strategic Shift

Honda has historically kept platform development close to home. This represents a significant change of direction.

Tata Technologies is separate from Tata Motors, though both are in the Tata Group. The former provides engineering and digital services to automotive, aerospace, and industrial clients.

An end-to-end platform program is a major undertaking. The platform determines everything from basic proportions to manufacturing logic.

This move fits Honda’s stated reset.

After posting a ¥423.9 billion ($2.8 billion) net loss for the year ended March 2026, Honda said it would use external resources more strategically.

Its “Triple Half” target aims to cut development cost, time, and workload in half from 2025 levels. Leveraging an Indian partner with competitive engineering talent makes sense.

There is no word on which model or market the platform will target.

Honda’s share in India has fallen to under two percent after owning almost seven percent a decade ago.
