Maserati has revealed that it developed and patented a simulated gearbox for its electric vehicles, but the system was intended for a model that never made it to production.

The technology was initially created for an all-electric version of the MC20, which Maserati scrapped in early 2025 due to anticipated low demand.

Davide Danesin, Maserati's engineering boss, confirmed the development to CarSales. com.

au, noting that the brand has prototypes and patents for artificial transmissions.

“I would consider artificial gearboxes for some applications [when] it can improve the driving experience ... we have some prototypes of it in-house.

Actually, we have also delivered some patents,” Danesin said.

He added that the system offered a functional advantage by improving the experience and controllability of the car.

Maserati joins a growing list of automakers, including Hyundai, Porsche, and Mercedes-AMG, that are exploring ways to make EVs more engaging.

No Fake Shifts for the GranTurismo Folgore

Despite the development, Danesin indicated that Maserati is unlikely to launch an EV with a simulated transmission in the near future.

He explained that such a system would not suit the GranTurismo Folgore, which is “much more [about] driving comfortably at high speed on the motorway.”

Danesin did not provide details on whether the system resembles Ferrari's Torque Index function, which uses paddles to adjust torque without an artificial rev-limiter.
