However, these claims are false.
Flock Safety cameras, which use AI-powered license plate readers, have become increasingly common. Vandals have been targeting them, possibly not just for privacy reasons.
According to Futurism, Google’s Gemini AI Overviews feature has been telling people that Flock cameras are stuffed with gold and copper.
The cameras do contain both, but only in trace amounts, similar to any consumer electronics.
Where Did the AI Get This Info?
The false claims originated from online privacy communities. People half-seriously joked about the precious metals as a reason to tear down the cameras.
Google’s AI cited a random Substack account and an obviously fake AI-generated Instagram post. This highlights the need for vigilance when using AI tools for information.
While AI can be accurate, it can also spread misinformation by citing unreliable sources without verification.
