The sixth-place Kansas City Current will visit twelfth-place Angel City FC at BMO Stadium on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, aiming for a fourth consecutive National Women's Soccer League victory.

Kansas City enters the midweek fixture with a 5-4-0 record and 15 points after consecutive 3-0 wins over Chicago and Houston.

Angel City sits four points behind with a 3-4-1 record, looking to break a five-game winless streak following a scoreless draw against the Portland Thorns.

Series History and Key Players

Kansas City leads the all-time regular season series 4-3-1 and has won the last four meetings between the clubs.

The Current have out-scored Angel City 12-9 all-time, including a 9-3 margin across their last four matches.

Their most recent encounter ended in a 1-0 Kansas City victory in Los Angeles on October 9, 2025.

Kansas City's recent defensive improvements have allowed goalkeeper Lorena to register consecutive clean sheets, bringing her career regular season total to 16.

The defensive stability complements a high-powered offense led by reigning league MVP Temwa Chawinga, who has scored five goals over her last two appearances.

Forward Michelle Cooper leads the roster with three assists this year.

Together, Cooper and Chawinga have combined for seven goals and four assists, accounting for 50 percent of all Kansas City goal contributions since the start of the season.

Angel City's Roster Challenges

Angel City enters the contest dealing with multiple roster absences, including Sydney Leroux due to an excused absence and Hina Sugita following a season-ending ACL tear.

However, midfielder Maiara Niehues returns to availability following a two-game suspension, while 22-year-old midfielder Carina Lageyre remains in the spotlight after making her first professional start last Sunday.

Angel City manager Alex Straus addressed the roster challenges and heavy May schedule during his Sunday post-match remarks.

"I'm very proud of the players and the way they've worked and what they've done over the last (few) weeks, even though we haven't had the luck on our side," said Straus.

Straus emphasized the need to balance defensive organization with offensive efficiency as the team targets a return to the win column.

"I think there are moments in the game where we are dominating and there are also moments where we have to defend," said Straus.

He noted that the team created enough opportunities against Portland but acknowledged areas requiring development.

"We create enough to score a goal in a very difficult environment, difficult away game against a team that in the last couple of weeks maybe has had a little bit more wind in their sails than we have had maybe in the last couple of weeks.

I'm proud we got a point in a difficult away game, but (at) the same time we can be better," said Straus.

With a shortened rotation, Straus noted that multiple squad members must prepare for heavy workloads across three matches in a single week.

"We don't have the biggest roster available, so a lot of players have to play three games (this week)," said Straus.

He expressed hope that the upcoming squad rotations would allow depth players to secure permanent roles moving forward.

"When this week is over, I think we still have two-thirds left of the season, but we need to prepare for that part as well.

There will be players that will get minutes, major minutes and then they have a chance to shine and maybe had a chance to tell the coach that they should have got more minutes earlier this season.

I hope players will grab this chance with both hands and show me that they want to be part of this going forward," said Straus.

Following Wednesday's match, Angel City will travel to face the Houston Dash on Saturday, May 23, before returning to BMO Stadium on May 31 to host the North Carolina Courage.
