Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh has given his full backing to head coach Danny Rohl despite a disappointing third-place finish in the Scottish Premiership.

The decision secures Rohl's position at Ibrox ahead of a major squad rebuild for the 2026/27 campaign.

Rohl took over from Russell Martin in October but lost four of the final five league games. Rangers finished ten points behind rivals Celtic.

Long-serving captain James Tavernier is set to leave after 11 years, and several loanees are expected to return to their parent clubs.

The club plans to overhaul the squad to give Rohl a full pre-season and a revamped roster.

Rangers are reportedly tracking Southampton midfielder Shea Charles, who previously played under Rohl on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

Cavenagh: 'We Need Significant Change'

"Danny is our coach, we think that Danny gives us the best opportunity to win the league next year," Cavenagh told Rangers TV.

He stressed that Rohl needs a pre-season and a revamped squad.

"I don't love the word backed, I would say that we recognise that the squad needs significant change, so we intend to do that," Cavenagh added.

The chairman acknowledged the season fell short of expectations.

"We didn't succeed, plain and simple, success is winning a title, we didn't win a title, we didn't succeed."

Cavenagh accepted responsibility on behalf of the board.

"It has been incredibly disappointing, responsibility in this club will always be with ownership, with the board, with me and with Paraag."

He described his first year as chairman as challenging but an honour.

"We leave this year with a bitter taste in our mouth because we got close to winning the title and didn't and we will let that remind us of what we didn't achieve and let it fuel us towards success in the future."

Cavenagh called for unity between supporters and staff. "It has not nearly been good enough and we know it needs to be better.

... We will do it together."

Analysts Weigh In on Rangers' Direction

Former players and analysts have debated the club's trajectory under North American ownership.

John Walker, a Scottish coach and analyst, said he was an advocate for Russell Martin's appointment but now believes a more experienced manager who knows the league would have been better.

"Probably the man that ended up in the Hearts dugout is the one we should have approached for a safer transition," Walker said, referring to Derek McInnes.

He compared Rangers' situation to Brighton's appointment of Chris Hughton during ownership transition.

Walker supported Cavenagh's decision to retain Rohl.

"I understand Cavenagh backing him as such, because I think that is the case, they probably look at Rohl behind the scenes more as the type of person they wanted in charge of their club."

He predicted a three-year transition before the ownership group stabilises its model, citing Leeds United as an example.

However, he warned that Rangers fans are impatient: "Draw that opening game of next season, everyone's got the pitchforks again."

Former Rangers goalkeeper Cammy Bell said the club has not won enough in recent history.

"They've got the new ownership who came in and willing to spend a lot of money but you've got to spend your money wisely, you've got to spend it in the right areas.

It's not happened so far."

Bell stressed that the culture must change. "There's got to be big change.

...

The culture has to change because they've got to get back to a winning culture and winning trophies."

Rangers winger Mikey Moore, on loan from Tottenham, acknowledged psychological issues within the squad.

"We need to realise the club that we're playing at, where this club needs to be, how we need to perform in and approach games in certain situations."

Rohl remains under contract until summer 2028. The club hierarchy is focused on intangible qualities as they plan the summer overhaul.
