BBC Sport has ended its historic 52-year broadcast of Football Focus, airing the final episode on Sunday, May 24, 2026.

The program, which first aired in 1974, concluded after nearly 2,000 episodes.

The network decided to cease production at the end of the 2025/26 Premier League season, citing shifting audience behaviors toward digital platforms and on-demand viewing.

Emotional Final Episode

Current host Alex Scott struggled to hold back tears during the opening broadcast package. She welcomed former pundit Garth Crooks back to the studio for the final show.

"Here we go for the last time, hello and welcome to Football Focus, we are bringing the curtain down today on the longest running football magazine show," Scott said.

Former presenter Dan Walker contributed a recorded message reflecting on the show's history. He highlighted the 2010s episode produced from Camp Bastion in Afghanistan as his personal favorite.

"The one show that really stands out for me was our programme that we made in Afghanistan," Walker said.

BBC Statement on Changing Habits

The BBC explained in an official statement that resources must adapt to how modern license fee payers access media.

"Following extensive consideration, BBC Sport has decided to say goodbye to Football Focus at the end of this season," the statement read.

The network noted that fans now access discussion, highlights, and news through digital platforms and social media.

"Changing audience behaviours mean fans are now increasingly consuming football content in different ways," the statement added.

Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer expressed confidence that the flagship highlights show remains secure despite wider programming cuts.

"I think Match of the Day will be there for a long, long time," Shearer said.

Shearer reflected on his personal history with Football Focus, calling the cancellation sad but understandable.

"It was pretty sad because I grew up watching Football Focus but I guess it's just the world we live in now," he said.

Both Shearer and Scott are scheduled to remain core parts of the BBC's broadcast coverage team for the 2026 World Cup.

New broadcast talent, including former Premier League players Olivier Giroud and Lucas Leiva, will join the lineup.

The final broadcast concluded a television legacy that defined Saturday lunchtime football coverage for British households since the mid-1970s.
