Growth and Community Support

Co-Race Director Kim Fenter highlighted the event's significant expansion over two and a half decades.

"Back in 2001, we had 400 racers. This weekend, we have 7,500," Fenter said.

She attributed the marathon's popularity to its flat course, Boston qualifier status, and strong community engagement.

"The course is flatter. It has a small grade to it.

It's also a Boston Marathon qualifier. That brings in a lot of runners who are trying to qualify.

And, our community welcomes this. Everyone comments on how wonderful it is from the volunteers to the cheering," Fenter added.

Approximately 1,500 volunteers assisted throughout the race weekend, managing water stations and registration.

"They are the heart of the event," Fenter said.

Weather and Logistics

Organizers proceeded with the scheduled 6:30 a. m.

start despite forecasts of rain during the opening miles.

"Running in the rain is not a horrible thing for runners. It keeps them cool so we don't worry too much about it.

Rain or shine, the race goes on," Fenter said.

Rolling road closures began Friday at noon near the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center, expanding to key streets by 4:00 a.
