The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association state track and field championships kicked off on June 5 at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex in La Crosse, with Milwaukee area athletes delivering record-breaking performances.
Preliminary events and finals for several distance and field events took place on Friday, with the remaining finals scheduled for June 6.
Clayborn Sets New 110 Hurdles Record
Wisconsin Lutheran's Niyer Clayborn broke his own 110-meter hurdle preliminary record with a time of 13.80 seconds, surpassing his 2025 mark of 13.92.
He secured the top seed for the finals, where he will defend his state title.
Other qualifiers included South Milwaukee senior Shaundel Williams (14.61), Homestead senior Jeridon Clark (14.61), Wisconsin Lutheran sophomore Cedric Bolden (14.69), Slinger senior Jeffrey Ford (14.89), Menomonee Falls senior Cyrus Jones (15.05), and Sussex Hamilton junior Tristan Haigh (15.08).
In the 300-meter hurdles prelims, Clayborn again led with the top time of 37.87 seconds.
Haigh (38.54), Oak Creek junior Kenneth Mueller (38.83), Sussex Hamilton senior Cooper Knuf (39.09), Williams (39.76), and Mukwonago senior Devin Viola (39.77) also advanced.
Waukesha West Dominates Relay, Discus, Triple Jump
Waukesha West's 800-meter relay team of Nolan Schmidbauer, Ammonra Lomas, Josh Ziebell, and Cole Zielinski set a Division 1 record with a time of 1 minute 25.65 seconds, breaking Arrowhead's 2025 mark of 1:25.88.
Zielinski admitted he pushed hard despite coaches' warnings, saying the record was electric.
He also won gold in the triple jump with a leap of 48 feet, 2 inches.
Nicolet senior Demian Harris (47-9.5) and junior Donavin Bond (45-8) finished third and fifth, respectively.
Harris called his final meet with Bond bittersweet, praising his growth.
Bond said he learned from Harris not to take things for granted.
Muskego senior Josiah Vanness (44-8.25) and Racine Park senior Mikaiden Hanson (44-8) also reached the podium.
Waukesha West senior Chetan Malkan won the Division 1 discus with a throw of 172-5, tying second-place Aidan Scholze but winning on a tiebreaker.
Malkan credited the new coaching staff for the team's success.
Quintero Breaks 800 Record, Arrowhead Tops 400 Relay
Marquette senior Gianni Quintero won the wheelchair 800 in 1:54.75, breaking his own record of 1:56.02.
It was his ninth individual state title, putting him one shy of the all-time record.
Arrowhead's 400-meter relay team of Presley Bencz, Ryan Heiman, Anthony Vetta, and Trey Resch set a Division 1 prelim record of 41.14 seconds.
Brown Deer's 400 relay team also broke a Division 2 record with 41.83 seconds.
Other Top Finishers from Milwaukee Area
Homestead's 3,200 relay team won Division 1 with a time of 7:43.00.
Muskego senior Will Kraklow placed fourth in pole vault (14-6), and Wisconsin Lutheran senior John Gehl was sixth (14-6).
Marquette senior Brendan Reardon (9:02.85) and Milwaukee Rufus King sophomore Logan Ziese (9:03.28) finished second and third in the 3,200.
New Berlin West junior Spencer Phelps took third in Division 2 pole vault (14-0).
Martin Luther senior Elijah Watkins was second in Division 2 triple jump (44-0.5).
Several area athletes qualified for finals in sprints, including Trey Resch leading the 100 and 200 prelims.
