Mexico eliminated Czechia from the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 victory in their final Group A match at the Estadio Azteca on Thursday, June 25.
The co-hosts maintained their flawless group-stage run, while Czechia finished with just one point from three matches.
Chavez Breaks the Deadlock
The breakthrough came in the second half when left-back Mateo Chavez finished a clinical counter-attack.
He slotted the ball past goalkeeper Matej Kovar after a pass from midfielder Luis Romo.
The strike was Chavez's first-ever senior international goal on his 12th cap. It matched his father Paulo Chavez, who scored twice in 30 appearances for Mexico.
Mexico doubled their lead when Julian Quinones capitalized on a poor clearance by Tomas Holes. The ball ricocheted off Jorge Sanchez, and Quinones followed up at close range.
The scoring followed a scoreless first half in which Czechia failed to break down a Mexican defense that has now gone 14 consecutive World Cup first halves without conceding.
In the final minutes, manager Javier Aguirre substituted 40-year-old goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa onto the pitch for Raul Rangel.
Ochoa made his appearance in his sixth career World Cup.
