Former Player Expresses Confidence
In an interview with RFI, former 24-year-old footballer Inês Sommer, who attended the match against Uzbekistan in Houston, expressed confidence regarding the tournament trajectory of the national team.
"I have a certain intuition that I think we will win this World Cup. I've been telling everyone for months.
Many people don't believe it, but I had the same intuition at Euro 2016 and we ended up winning that Euro," Sommer said.
"I really believe in this group of players.
I believe in the quality of the players, but I also feel there is a certain energy around, a certain mystique, that I think we have a little star that will help us," she added.
"I think, for many reasons, we have an incredible generation here, with a lot of quality."
Sommer noted that this is likely Ronaldo's last World Cup and expressed her desire for him to add this trophy to his achievements.
"I think he deserves it a lot.
And also, obviously, with everything that happened this last year, unfortunately with the passing of Diogo Jota and his brother, I think we have to do this for them too and that it be extra motivation, because it is to honor Jota and to honor our country," she stated.
Portugal advanced to the World Cup Round of 32 prior to its final group match against Colombia, following favorable results in other groups.
