Mercedes driver George Russell secured the pole position for the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring on June 27, 2026, after managing a superior lap time despite lifting due to a crash by Max Verstappen.
Charles Leclerc earned a front-row spot next to Russell, while Lewis Hamilton and championship leader Kimi Antonelli locked down the second row of the starting grid.
Verstappen qualified fifth after losing control of his Red Bull RB22 and crashing into the wall during his final flying lap, which initially triggered a single yellow flag instead of a double yellow flag.
The standard safety procedure was followed according to an explanation given by the FIA, despite Verstappen describing the delayed double yellow flag in a high-speed corner as highly unusual.
Following his crash, Verstappen remained composed and updated his team over the radio regarding his physical condition.
"Knieën gestoten, komt wel goed," said Max Verstappen, Red Bull Driver.
Meanwhile, McLaren driver Lando Norris expressed strong frustration regarding the on-track decisions and knowledge of his fellow Formula 1 competitors.

Reflecting on the recent performance struggles and technical difficulties faced by the Red Bull team, Verstappen joked about taking a prolonged break away from the sport.
