George Russell secured his fifth pole position of the 2026 season in qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
The session was reshaped early when Kimi Antonelli crashed out in the first qualifying round, leaving Russell as the only Mercedes driver to advance.
Russell's final lap of 1m 42.526s put him eight tenths clear of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.
Oscar Piastri ended just 0.001 seconds behind Leclerc in third, followed by Red Bull's Isack Hadjar and McLaren's Lando Norris.
Norris lost time with a lock-up on his final lap, which prevented a stronger result.
Antonelli Crash and Grid Penalties Reshape the Order
Antonelli's crash at Turn 1 ended his session early and left him 16th on the grid.
Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton qualified sixth, with Pierre Gasly, Max Verstappen, and Williams' Carlos Sainz completing the top ten.
Both Audi drivers exited in the first qualifying round despite significant upgrades.
Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll faced grid penalties due to new power unit components, sending them to the back of the starting grid.
Russell dealt with front locking but improved steadily through the session.
Max Verstappen described his handling troubles, saying, "The car is bottoming like crazy on the front, I can't brake."
The session also saw incidents including Stroll's lock-up and Antonelli's crash.
Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad struggled with errors, while Haas' Ollie Bearman narrowly missed a top-ten spot.
