Actress Lauren Koslow made a surprise return to the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless on Monday, June 29, 2026.
She temporarily stepped into the iconic role of Jill Abbott.
The sudden casting change happened because longtime portrayer Jess Walton could not travel from her home in Oregon to Los Angeles for crucial taping sessions.
Head writer Josh Griffith worked quickly with the show's publicist to find a solution.
"When we got the sad news that Jess wouldn't be able to make it down here for this, we were just so close to when we needed to do it," Griffith recalled.
Because both The Young and the Restless and Days of Our Lives are produced under the Sony umbrella, executives coordinated schedules to let Koslow film around her existing commitments.
Griffith noted that the characters of Jill and Kate share multiple similarities.
"We reached out to her," explained Griffith.
"She was contracted on DAYS, but because of Sony we were able to reach out to them, and they very graciously agreed to let us work out a scheduling thing."
New Storyline for Jill Abbott
The temporary recast sets up a brand new storyline for Genoa City. Jill arrives back in town with a clear family directive regarding the family business operations.
"She wants them to get along," Griffith stated.
"She wants him to accept that Cane will be running this company that Billy has coveted for so long."
The character's return also involves internal conflict and personal deception. Jill must manage an ongoing familial rivalry while guarding sensitive information.
"She wants these two semi-brothers to come together and stop bickering," teased Griffith.
"And she also needs to keep a huge secret that she can't afford for Billy to find out."
Production officials confirmed that the temporary casting does not represent a permanent change. Griffith affirmed the team's appreciation for Walton's decades-long performance.
"We love her," stressed Griffith. "She is Jill to the masses."
The writing team intends to bring Walton back as soon as logistically possible. Future appearances depend on her travel capacity.
"I hope that as we move forward there will be opportunity [to see more of Walton's Jill] based on her availability," nodded Griffith.
Koslow's Rapid Preparation
The unexpected casting arrangement required Koslow to rapidly prepare for the intense taping schedule over a single weekend.
She turned to online resources to study recent character dynamics before arriving on set.
"They were asking if I could step in and help out," recalled Koslow.
"It was crazy because I heard on a Friday and it was for the next week, but I was thrilled."
The production timeline required Koslow to split her work week between two separate major daytime productions. She discovered that the dialogue demands of Genoa City were significant.
"I had forgotten how word-intensive Y&R is," admitted Koslow. "And that's why I got very concerned about it.
They're really, really good scripts and they just threw me into what is going on in Jill's life right now."
She added, "But I was running lines all weekend, and then that first week, I was working at Days on Tuesday and Wednesday, and then I worked at Y&R on Thursday and Friday."
The transition brought back distinct personal and professional memories for the actress, who met her husband in the studio's makeup room during her original 1980s run.
The production crew prepared a personalized dressing room placard to mark the occasion.
"It was like a trip back in time," shared Koslow. "Just turning in the gate, I was flooded with memories.
It was emotional for sure."
She noted that the makeup room was exactly the same as in the '80s.
"That's where I met Nicky [Schillace, makeup artist], my husband, so it was really like going home."
The existing cast offered significant assistance to ease Koslow into the heavy workload.
She noted that a built-in narrative connection with former co-star Billy Flynn provided an immediate comfort level.
"The entire cast and crew are so gracious, and everyone's so supportive," praised Koslow.
"I think everyone knew it was a big thing to do, to have to step in there and honor Jess and her performance."
The actress found that portraying the complex parent-child dynamic with Jason Thompson required precise adjustment. She relied on guidance from executive leadership to anchor her performance.
"The only problem I did have is I kept calling Cane 'Billy,' but of course, Jason's Billy," mused Koslow.
"Jill and Billy have a very complex relationship. I got some great notes from the executive producer."
The assignment concluded as a meaningful milestone for the daytime veteran, representing a complete return to her original professional roots.
Koslow expressed deep gratitude for the sudden opportunity.
"When Josh first asked me, I told him, 'This would be so amazing because for me, it would be totally full-circle,'" recalled Koslow.
