Morocco advanced to the FIFA World Cup round of 16 on Monday after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw through extra time in Monterrey, Mexico.

The victory sets up a knockout stage match against co-hosts Canada in Houston on Saturday.

Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou stopped a penalty from Crysencio Summerville before Ismael Saibari converted the decisive spot kick to secure the win.

The North African squad forced extra time when Issa Diop scored a stoppage-time equalizer to cancel out a second-half opening goal by Dutch forward Cody Gakpo.

Penalty Shootout Drama

The shootout featured multiple missed opportunities from both sides. Morocco's Neil El Aynaoui and Dutch substitute Justin Kluivert missed their attempts.

Soufiane Rahimi's shot narrowly crossed the line under Netherlands goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. Quinten Timber then shot wide for the Netherlands.

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi hit the post before Saibari sealed the win.

Match Highlights

Prior to the second-half goals, Morocco created several prominent scoring chances. Verbruggen saved a close-range header from Ayoub Bouaddi and a powerful strike by El Aynaoui.

Bounou protected the Moroccan net by parrying a long-range shot from Micky van de Ven, while Hakimi hit the crossbar later in the match.

The Netherlands broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute after manager Ronald Koeman substituted Wout Weghorst into the game.

Weghorst won a flick-on to find Summerville, who assisted Gakpo for a first-time finish past Bounou.

Gakpo became visibly emotional during his celebration, having recently lost his unborn son during pregnancy.

Morocco established late pressure as Hakimi pushed forward from the backline, though Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk initially stopped an opportunity from Saibari.

Morocco eventually equalized during stoppage time when substitute Chemsdine Talbi delivered a cross that allowed Diop to head the ball past Verbruggen.

Canada secured its place in the round of 16 on Sunday in Inglewood, California, following a 1-0 win against South Africa courtesy of a 92nd-minute goal by Stephen Eustáquio.

This marks the second consecutive World Cup where Canada and Morocco will play each other.

Canadian supporter Dalen Brueckner, who traveled from Vancouver to Los Angeles for the round of 32 match, expressed his excitement about the team's progression to the next stage in Texas.

"If you would've told me four years ago, hey Dalen, in four years you're going to be watching Canada play the Netherlands or Morocco in the round of 16, I wouldn't have believed you," said Brueckner.

Brueckner noted that he traveled with two friends he met during a previous match against Switzerland at BC Place.

"It's hard to put into words. It was the best sporting moment of my life," said Brueckner.

He described the intense atmosphere and his emotional reaction following the historic victory for Canadian men's soccer.

"I've never shouted louder. I've never been so happy.

I had to grab my seat after a while, because I was like, 'What's happening? You haven't breathed in a long time,'" said Brueckner.

While his travel companions returned to British Columbia, Brueckner confirmed he plans to attend the upcoming match in Houston, having attended all four of Canada's games.

"We'll be friends forever. Will be close forever.

When I get back to Vancouver, we're already planning on getting together to relive the moment, because yesterday was so fast, so, so incredible.

You don't really get to have it sink in," said Brueckner.

The fan emphasized his dedication to supporting the national team during their tournament run.

"I'll never miss a Canada World Cup game. We just save up those four years, and then we go crazy," said Brueckner.

He added that these experiences have allowed him to form deep bonds with fellow tournament attendees.

"You only live once. And these are the moments that you remember forever.

I've made some lifetime friends over this journey, and that's what life's about," said Brueckner.

Brueckner stated that his phone has been constantly receiving messages from other supporters arranging travel to Texas.

"My phone has been buzzing nonstop from people who are already booking flights to Houston," he said.

He expects a strong showing of Canadian fans inside the Houston venue on Saturday.

"I would say Canadians are going to surprise again.

They support our team, and they will be in Houston, and there will be a lot of red in the stands.

We'll be cheering our boys loud, and wow, we just can't wait to watch them," said Brueckner.
