Municipalities across Ontario are adjusting Canada Day festivities and opening emergency cooling centers as a severe heat wave brings dangerous temperatures and humidity.
Environment Canada has issued an orange heat warning for a long-duration event expected to last through Friday, with maximum temperatures reaching 36 degrees Celsius and humidex values feeling as high as 47 degrees Celsius.
Orillia Cancels Midway, Adds Safety Measures
In Orillia, organizers canceled a scheduled midway on June 30 due to extreme conditions. Operations are expected to resume at Couchiching Beach Park for Wednesday's holiday events.

and celebrates everything that makes Orillia such an incredible place to call home," Kloostra said.
Kloostra noted that the newly formed not-for-profit corporation had to build every organizational aspect from scratch. "We truly started from scratch.
There wasn't even a manual waiting for us," he said.
More than 75 volunteers have stepped forward since January to assist with logistics, governance, and finances.
Local business partnerships and donations helped the committee meet its initial monetary targets.
"We set ambitious financial goals at the beginning of the project, and I'm proud to say we've met those goals thanks to the incredible community sponsors, donors, volunteers and local businesses," Kloostra said.
The large turnout ensured all operational roles are staffed, keeping the event free for attendees. "None of this would be possible without our volunteers.
They are the reason this community celebration remains free for everyone," he added.
Due to the high heat index, organizers have set up a first aid tent and urge participants to bring water, sunscreen, and hats, and to seek shade when needed.
Officials will continuously assess the safety of children's inflatable attractions as temperatures climb, making "game-time decisions."
"Safety will always come first," Kloostra said. Despite the weather, traveling amusement rides remain a core draw.
"I think the kids look forward to it immensely. It's been a tradition.
If it wasn't there, it would certainly make the day not as enjoyable," he said.
Visitors are asked to be patient and courteous.
"We ask everyone to be patient, be kind, and remember that thousands of people will be enjoying the park together.
A little courtesy goes a long way," Kloostra said.
Collectible button sales will help fund future community initiatives. "Canada Day belongs to the community.
We're simply the volunteers honored to help bring it together," Kloostra concluded.
Brantford Opens Cooling Centers
In Brantford, public health agencies declared a parallel heat alert.
Environment Canada warning preparedness meteorologist Peter Kimbell noted that while multi-day heat waves occur periodically, this event stands out for its persistence.
"Every couple of years we see a heatwave like this one, but it might be unique in how long it lasts," Kimbell said.
Historical records show current temperatures remain below the extreme records of 1936, when Toronto hit 40 degrees for three days in a row.
"We won't be doing that.
But it's going to be hot and dangerous for many people, especially those outdoors and those living alone or without air conditioning," he added.
Minor cooling may occur over the weekend, but the hazardous pattern could return early next week.
Grand Erie Public Health has opened cooling centers at Brantford Public Libraries, the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre, and municipal splash pads.
Twenty-four-hour emergency shelter intake is available through SOAR Community Services for vulnerable residents.
