Helen Skelton has opened up about the personal lessons she gained from competing on Strictly Come Dancing following her sudden separation from her ex-husband.

The Morning Live presenter joined the 2022 series of the BBC dance competition shortly after her split from rugby player Richie Myler, with whom she shares three children.

Although wildlife presenter Hamza Yassin won the trophy, Skelton became a fan favorite during her run to the final.

Motivation and Distraction

In a recent interview with The Times, Skelton explained why she decided to take part in the high-profile show.

“You want to do something loud enough and cool enough that people talk to you about that and not about the heartbreak,” she said.

The presenter noted that the program became a positive focal point for her family during a challenging time.

“There was a lot going on for my whole family, but what people were asking about was what a jolly old time I was having on Strictly,” she added.

Skelton also shared that her children embraced the experience by hosting themed gatherings during the weekly broadcasts.

“My kids would have a Strictly party every weekend with their cousins. It was an amazing distraction for them,” she said.

Performing under intense public scrutiny changed her perspective on sharing personal difficulties.

“One of the best lessons I took from Strictly is, no one is interested in your drama,” Skelton stated.

She contrasted her approach with current trends regarding mental health disclosures.

“It’s a weird one because these days it’s all about mental health, everyone’s told to share everything.

Maybe I’m old-fashioned; I prefer just to show up and get it done,” she said.

Memorable Performance and Support

During the competition, Skelton delivered a memorable Musicals Week performance of “Mein Herr” from Cabaret alongside her professional partner Gorka Marquez, addressing her personal growth prior to the routine.

“Strictly has given me so many things already,” she said.

She expressed gratitude for the platform and the chance to showcase her abilities on the dancefloor.

“I’ve got lots to be thankful for and I know what I can offer, and the great thing for me is this dance is all about that,” she added.

Marquez offered public words of support to Skelton during the broadcast, acknowledging the emotional weight she carried.

“I know you’ve been having a difficult time and I know you may feel like you’re not beautiful or good enough or anything.

But if you don’t believe in yourself, I believe in you,” he said.

He emphasized that the entire production team stood behind her.

“Everybody here believes in you,” Marquez added.

Skelton later reflected on their professional dynamic and the boundaries of their public statements.

“What I love about Gorka is that he has my very best interests at heart, and we are genuinely very good friends.

But sometimes, maybe, we need to talk about what he’s allowed to say publicly,” she said.
